Try these Tasty Tea Mocktails for Sober October

After a summer of socialising and with Christmas festivities on the horizon, Sober October provides a welcome break for many. Try making a delicious tea infused mocktail or two, and embrace the month without losing out on fun or flavour.

Earl Grey Old Fashioned Mocktail

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon loose leaf Earl Grey tea
  • 1 orange
  • 2 dashes of Angostura bitters
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Water

Preparation:

  1. Bring about 2 cups of water to a boil and allow it to cool for a minute. Steep the Earl Grey tea for 3 to 5 minutes. Strain out the leaves. Let cool and refrigerate until you’re ready to assemble the drink.
  2. Add sugar and bitters to a rocks glass. Cut a slice of orange and squeeze in about 1 teaspoon of its juice – just enough to saturate the sugar.
  3. Stir the mixture until the sugar is mostly dissolved.
  4. Fill the glass with ice. Add a quarter cup of the brewed Earl Grey tea. Stir a few times until the drink is chilled.
  5. Remove a strip of the orange rind using a vegetable peeler. Twist the rind to release its oils over the drink, glide it over the rim of the glass, and drop it in.
  6. Repeat steps 2-5 with the rest of the tea to make more servings of the mocktail.

Chocolate Matcha Mar-Tea-ni

Step 1 – Combine 250ml almond or oat milk with 1 tsp matcha powder. Use a matcha whisk to combine in a small bowl or use a milk frother.

Step 2 – Carefully melt 50g of dark chocolate (about half a bar). Break the chocolate into small pieces and place in a small bowl. Put in the microwave and heat for 2 minutesThe chocolate will burn if you leave it in any longer or use the highest power level. You can also melt over a double boiler on the stove but the amount is so small I’ve found it easier in the microwave. Remove after 2 minutes and stir the chocolate to finish melting any small chunks.

Step 3 – Drizzle some of the melted chocolate around the inside of the glasses before quickly pouring the rest in the matcha bowl. Combine well with your matcha whisk before transferring the mixture to a cocktail shaker with some ice. Give it a shake and strain into your glasses.
